Frequently Asked Questions
How long do they last?
In lab and field tests, when sprinkled on the ground, Mosquito Beads offer Peak Performance Days 1-2. The scent slowly lessens on Days 3-5. Periodically shake the closed jar to reactivate the scent. In the jar, scent can last months.
How much coverage is there per ounce of product?
Spreading Mosquito Beads on the ground, covers approximately 60 sq ft per ounce.
The 5oz jar covers 300 square feet.
The 8oz jar covers 480 square efeet.
The 18oz jar covers 1,000 square feet.
The 72oz jar covers 4320 square feet.
Are they harmful to the environment?
Absolutely not. Our beads are fully biodegradable and environment-friendly.
Can the scent be harmful to humans, pets or animals?
Nope! Our proprietary scent is made with 100% natural essential oils comprised of Citronella, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Geraniol and Peppermint.
What if my dog or cat eat it?
- Dogs: Typically avoid. The citrus, herbal, and spicy aroma profile is repellent to most dogs. A rare curious or food-obsessed dog might taste a small amount (e.g., 0.1–0.5 oz), but the bitter taste stops further eating. Attraction is unlikely unless behavioral quirks (e.g., pica) override.
- Cats: Typically avoid. Cats’ sensitivity to citrus, phenols, and strong oils makes this a natural deterrent. They’re less likely to approach or ingest than dogs due to scent aversion and picky eating habits.
Verdict: Both dogs and cats would typically avoid eating this product due to its intense, repellent scent and unpalatable taste/texture. The risk of ingestion is low unless large amounts are accessible and a pet is unusually determined. To be extra safe, avoid leaving piles (e.g., >4 oz for dogs, >1 oz for cats) where curiosity could override instinct—though even then, they’d likely stop after a sniff or lick.
Will this product cause me to slip if I walk on it?
Mosquito Beads do move if walked on leaving the possibility of slipping. We do not recommend sprinkling beads on a hard surface (ie, patio or sidewalk) where people may be running. There's no risk of falling when used outdoors on grass or dirt.
What does citronella really do anyway?
Human-beings have distinct odors (for better or worse!) that Mosquitoes love. Our proprietary Citronella blend can mask our distinct scent, rendering them blind to our presence.
Does the morning dew wash away the scent?
No. Rain and heavy dew have no affect on our scent-infused beads. Exposure to air is what starts to lessen the scent of our beads.
What is the most effective way to use Mosquito Beads?
Sprinkled on the ground for best results!!
Where are Mosquito Beads made?
UNITED STATES of AMERICA!
FIFRA: 25b Minimum Risk
The effectiveness of any mosquito repellent can vary due to conditions such as physical activity, perspiration, water exposure, and how attractive you are to mosquitoes as well as your climate and weather.
Please note: The EPA categorizes insect repellents made with essential oils as “minimum risk pesticides,” so they are not required to be registered with the EPA or undergo testing for how effective they are or for how long they last.
This product qualifies for exemption from EPA registration under FIFRA
Mosquito Beads manufactures our "Mosquito Beads" products in the USA using natural ingredients intended to mask the human scent and help keep pesky mosquitos at bay.
As you read about our natural bug repellent beads, please note that if you are looking for long-lasting protection in severe conditions, such as venturing into areas that are heavily infested with specific species of insects or ticks that may transmit diseases to humans, such as Malaria, Zika, or Lyme disease, the CDC recommends repellents that contain active ingredients such as DEET or Picaridin.
The CDC website has numerous pages of information concerning insect-borne diseases, the most effective insect repellents, and travel precautions.
